Another unique activity that you can enjoy at Uga Ulagalla is archery. Set up amidst a grove of mature rain trees, it’s an activity for all abilities. For those that haven’t tried it before, including children, our recreational assistants will get you started by showing you how to hold the bow and take aim. If you have some experience, they may also provide some healthy competition. This activity can be enjoyed at any time of the day and there is always a chance of spotting birds, grey langur monkeys, macaques, mongoose, giant squirrels and some of our resident monitor lizards stealthily stalking the grounds.
There are very few places in Sri Lanka where you can explore your surroundings on horseback. We have our own stables at Uga Ulagalla, and riders of all abilities are welcome to explore our nature-rich locality on the back of one of our resident horses. Routes take you along a network of rust-red tracks and pathways leading in and around our neighbouring lakes, onto tank bunds shaded by kumbuk trees and through waist-high grasslands. All rides are guided and there’s a high chance of seeing aquatic birds and domesticated buffalo.
Younger guests can join our Junior Ranger Program which has been designed to teach curious minds about nature, wildlife and the environment in a fun and engaging way. Over a morning or afternoon, we take children on an exciting journey of natural discovery. Some of the activities include identifying animals and birds, sketching favorite creatures, understanding the importance of eco-systems and threats to wild life, visiting our organic garden to learn about eating healthily and sustainably, and looking out for wild footprints and animal tracks.
The Wanamaduwa Tank is our venue for placid kayaking adventures at dawn or dusk. Thought to date back to the third century AD, and to the time of King Mahasen, a renowned Anuradhapura king, it covers 100 acres and is popular with villagers using nets and liners to fish. Exploring this picturesque reservoir by kayak is the gentlest way to observe its wild habitants. Paddle past water lillies and lotus flowers in whites, pinks and purples, and close in on egrets, herons and many other water birds dipping in and out of the still water. On dry land, kumbuk trees provide a leafy refuge for kingfishers and storks.
This unique drive takes you well off the beaten track, weaving along earthen tracks through rural countryside dominated by rice paddies. Birds and buffalo are often sighted alongside other wildlife, including elephants, particularly when you reach scenic Nachchaduwa Lake, a vast reservoir framed by dense pockets of forest and the distant hills. This setting makes a great spot for enjoying sundowners before heading back to the hotel. *Elephant sightings however depend on the season, July to August being the peak.
With over 120 bird species identified at Uga Ulagalla along with a supporting cast of monkeys, squirrels, mongoose and reptiles, our nature walks are richly rewarding. Our grounds come alive at dawn with a magical chorus of birdsong, and our early morning nature walks may help to identify some of its most profilic singers. The leisurely hour-long walk leads through our resort and onto the kumbuk-flanked banks of the Wanamaduwa Tank. Highlights include orioles and kingfishers, the brown fish owl and two endemics, the grey hornbill and the Ceylon jungle fowl – Sri Lankan’s national bird.
We have our own organic garden that produces fresh seasonal fruits, vegetables and herbs, which all play their part in Sri Lankan cuisine. The heart of any home is its kitchen, and we invite you to visit our organic garden and be guided by our Executive Chef in the intricacies of Sri Lankan cooking, its culture and unique story. Select ingredients from our garden and let our chef teach you some wholesome Sri Lankan dishes in a private cookery class set up in our rustic kitchen. You’ll learn how to prepare rice and curry the traditional way by cooking with clay pots over an open flame, and come away with some authentic recipes for taking home and sharing with friends and family.
Discover your surroundings on an inspiring peddle around our local village, Athungama.
