9 amazing places for Surfing in the Maldives

Looking for the best places for surfing in the Maldives? Whether you are a beginner or an experienced surfer, these beautiful islands have so many options to choose from. Here are 9 places to surf in the Maldives with surf-perfect waves and crystal clear beaches.

Chickens

Located on the uninhabited island of Villingili Mathi Huraa, Chickens is one of the best places to surf in the Maldives. A wave that ranges from 3ft to 10ft is observable here, and it allows for rides up to 500m long. Chickens have a wave that works well with winds from northeast and northwest and gets the most swell out from a number of breaks in North Male.

This wave is a two-sectioned left-hander and makes it easy to do barrels in some parts of it. With the right conditions, Chickens has one of the best waves to surf. This spot is famous among and used by rather experienced surfers.

Jailbreaks / Prison Point

The Prison Point is a surfing spot that is right across from the national jail of the Maldives on the Himafushi island. The surf point was inaccessible due to the presence of the jail, and it was only just recently opened to the masses.

The waves here are a bit risky and probably are the fastest waves in the country. A three-sectioned right-handed wave with a big swell is present here. Jailbreak’s waves tend to start slowly and grow as they advance. If you are surfing in the Maldives and want some thrill in your surf, try the Jailbreak and its long and fast barrel sections.

Lohis

Home to some of the most consistent waves in the country, Lohis offers its surfers a calmer experience. A two-sectioned left-handed wave with a big enough swell is in action here. Southern swell and wind from the northeast curves the wave creating a stunning long wave that barrels across the reef.

The spot got named after the island resort of Lohifushi, and only allowed resort goers access to it. This makes it one of the least crowded places to do surfing in the Maldives and has perfect conditions from May to October.

Muli

The wave in Muli is a unique one. It has two sections, and both breaks are different from each other. Both of these got protection from winds that blow in from the south and need a bigger swell to work.

The inside wave of Muli or F1 is a right-handed fast, barreling one. It also has long walls that allow for continuous surfing. The issue with this is its shallow nature. But don’t worry, even though it’s shallow, the ending is safe.

Mushrooms are the name of the outer wave of Muli, and it’s a long-walled right-hander as well. Swell pick-up here is much better than F1 and works better with southwestern winds.

Mahibadhoo

Mahibadhoo is a three-sectioned wave, and they are the outside, the corner, and the inside. All of these sections are connected with one another. When the swell conditions are right, Mahibadhoo is one of the best places to surf in the Maldives.

Pulling in to barreling right after take-off is still a possibility, even if the reef on this spot is shallow and straight. You will need some speed to get to the corner section. When there, the mellow wave allows performing turns while the inside section provides heavy barrel sections.

The Only drawback of the Mahibadhoo wave is its rather small nature. At times, there can be heavy currents that make it impossible to surf.

Castaways

A soft right-handed wave is present at the Castaway surf point. Surfing conditions are good on all tides. If you want the best surfing experience, go when the swell is above 4ft, and the tides are high. The reason behind this is the shallow reef present here.

Here the waves break nicely with the help of the Northern winds. The isolated island and the abundance of marine life make Castaways a perfect vacation spot when it comes to surfing in the Maldives.

Madihera

Considered by many to be a spoiled wave, Madihera is one of the lesser-known surf points to surf in the Maldives. This spot tends to pick up a lot of swells, and it needs to meet very specific conditions if you want to surf here.

When the conditions are favourable, you can see two sectioned left-handed waves with a few take-off points. Due to the bottom of the reef being rough, the wave changes from rough to soft in some parts. In some parts of the reef, waves break in deep water and provide heavy barrels.

Tsunami’s

The largest left-handed break that picks up most swell on the eastern Laamu Atoll is the main selling point of the Tsunami’s. The wave here is of right swell angle and gets protection from the winds blowing in from the North.

There are 3 sections that allow you to chain surf combos while in here. Start with a barrel, then a wall of turns, and end on another barrel at the final section. The reef under here is straight and tends to close out.

Yin Yang

Some of the most consistent waves in Laamu are on the Yin Yang surf spot. This is a two-sectioned wave that is inside and outside. The inside section consists of a long area that offers some hollow barrels. Even though the wave seems aggressive in the later parts, it starts rather friendly.

The outside section is a section with a mellow wall that allows for safe rides. The surf spot works best with the help of Southeastern swell and is one of the better spots to do Surfing in the Maldives.
