Founded in the 4th century BC, Anuradhapura is the cradle of Buddhist civilisation in Sri Lanka. The city is one of the archaeological wonders of the world. It is home to the 2,300-year-old sacred bo tree, the Sri MahaBodhiya. It is also the location of the largest stupas of the ancient world – the Ruwanweliseya, the Jethawanaramaya and the Abhayagiriya. The Jethawanaramaya was the third tallest building in the ancient world, after the two largest pyramids of Egypt.

From Heritance Kandalama the giant golden Buddha outside the entrance to this 340m-high ancient rock temple is visible. The history of Dambulla Cave Temples dates back to the 1st century BC, when King Walagamba, defeated at Anuradhapura, took refuge in a cave here for 14 years. When he regained the throne, he turned five of the caves into shrines. The caves include a reclining Buddha 15 meters long and another 150 meters life-size Buddhist statues. Many of the paintings in the temple date back to the 19th century
The Heritance Kandalama Eco Park demonstrates best practices in conservation. You can see our sewage treatment plant, a plant nursery, herb garden and beehives. The spectacular UNESCO Sigiriya (Lion Rock) Rock Fortress was built in the 5th century AD by King Kashyapa. It is a wonder of ancient engineering, art and culture. The palace complex at the foot of the rock still has the remains of four indoor swimming pools where the king’s 500 concubines bathed. The palace structure was built with complex water arteries in the walls that provided natural air conditioning in the hot climate.
Polonnaruwa was the capital of Sri Lanka in the 11th and 12th centuries. In its heyday, the 6km of city walls housed hundreds of people. Listed by Lonely Planet as one of the Top Ten Wildlife Spectacles of the World. Witness one of nature’s greatest spectacles at Minneriya and Kaudulla National Parks. Spanning 249 square kilometers, this vast reservoir—originally built by King Mahasen over 1,500 years ago—has evolved into a thriving sanctuary for wild elephants. Plan your visit with Heritance Kandalama for an unforgettable wildlife experience. As the waters recede, lush grasses and tender shoots emerge, attracting a diverse array of grazing animals. This seasonal transformation gives rise to “The Gathering”—a breathtaking phenomenon where hundreds of elephants assemble to feed, bathe, and socialize. At times, you may witness over 200 elephants in one place, creating a truly awe-inspiring sight.
