Known also as the Red Masjid and Al Jamiul Alfar Masjid, The Red Mosque in Colombo is located in Pettah, one of the busiest areas in Colombo, also one of the oldest parts of the city. Built somewhere in 1908, this architectural monument was once a popular landmark for sailors coming towards the port of Colombo, whereby both gents and ladies were granted access to the mosque. The architectural styles draw elements from Indian and indo-Islamic architecture featuring a distinctive red and white striped two-storey structure reminiscent of the Jamek Mosque Kuala Lampur with the domes built in the shape of pomegranates. Set along the bustling streets, nothing is as mesmerizing as the Red Mosque. When visiting the mosque, you are required to dress modestly.
